Phil Mickelson Enhances Legacy with Stunning Open Victory

After two decades into an athletic career, legacies are typically fully formed and victories seem ephemeral, but not for Phil Mickelson. On Sunday, Lefty did what seemed impossible; he came from five shots behind to win his first career major at the British Open. At the one tournament Mickelson feared he would never win, he shot three-under par for the tournament at his closing 66 for the best round of his career.

Phil Mickelson’s win at The Open Tournament gives him five career major triumphs and rounds his resume, which previously consisted of three Masters and a lone PGA Championship. Joining Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Tiger Woods as the only players to win three different majors since 1980, Mickelson is on track to becoming an all-time great. Recording the best game of his career at 43 years old, what will Mickelson accomplish next? Although Mickelson probably won’t catch Tiger Woods and his 14 majors, he might just be able to capture a U.S. Open title to complete his career Grand Slam or notch No. 1 golfer in the world.

After his recent collapse at the U.S. Open, Mickelson holding up the silver Claret Jug and the long hug with his entire family was a sweet sight. The father who flew cross country during the U.S. Open practice rounds in order to be at his daughter’s middle school graduation, more than deserved this major triumph. Phil Mickelson may be one of the most unorthodox athletes golf has seen, but he is certainly a class act and one of the best players in the history of the game.
